The Gumbo Brothers
Over the last seven years,The Gumbo Brothers have firmly rooted themselves in the eclectic artistic tradition of Venice Beach, California with weekly performances at various local venues and parties. Since 2003, they have been entertaining the Venice community with an annual Mardi Gras parade on the boardwalk including a traditional brass band, funky drum corps, stilt walkers, dancers and costumed bead-throwing revelers. The band's debut cd, Funky Freedom, was released in 2007. According to CDBaby, "This collection of swampy funk is deep in the pocket, right where it should be. The grooves are thick, the vocals are sparse and always add texture to the interplay between the musicians, and the vibes never get bogged down...The Gumbo Brothers say they're 'going to hit you with some ass-shakin' funk!' They got that right. Prepare yourself." It was followed up in 2008 by The Gumbo Brothers On Fire, a collection of original Mardi Gras songs.
Influences include: The Meters, Dr. John, War, Grant Green, Ivan “boogaloo” Joe Jones, James Brown, The Dirty Dozen, Galactic, and Walter “Wolfman” Washington. With over 300 shows behind them including notable appearances at the Boom Boom Room in San Francisco, The House of Blues in LA, and venues up and down the west coast, this Venice-based quartet is bringing their infectious, booty movin' bayou grooves to swamp-funk fans throughout the southland and beyond.

To become a life legend – this is a task with many unknowns, and only some people in the history of music made it a reality. These four were put on the list right after their debut album Black (2006). The thunderous start was only a beginning to be followed by White, and even music critics were convinced – this is how the history is made. Two years of a full-fledged success across all the borders prompted the next revelation – Blue (2008), which confidently turned the cardinal points of the compass into a fractal of infinite complexity, with innumerable sparkling ridges of originality, talent and truths known only to God. It's difficult to be cynical if there is no chance left for cynicism.

Red is a new colour in the palette of Nino Katamadze & Insight and everyone who is not a stranger to the sincere love of music must be counting minutes to its release. Thankfully, there is a concrete date to specify this arithmetic – the 26th of November – and there is a tangible spot in the space – Crocus City Hall, Moscow. Perhaps too simple for an event like this.

TOP POP, R&B AND HIP-HOP ARTISTS AND PRODUCERS COME TOGETHER TO CELEBRATE THE MUSIC OF MULTI-GRAMMY WINNING PRODUCER, ARRANGER AND COMPOSER QUINCY JONES ON NEW ALBUM "Q: SOUL BOSSA NOSTRA"

Renowned for blending musical genres as he did with his 1989 multi-Grammy winning "Album of the Year" Back on the Block and 1995's platinum Q's Jook Joint, Q: Soul Bossa Nostra will feature an assortment of artists and producers from the Pop, R&B and Hip-Hop worlds such as Usher, Ludacris, Akon, Jamie Foxx, Jennifer Hudson, Mary J. Blige, T-Pain, Robin Thicke, LL Cool J, John Legend, Snoop Dogg, Wyclef Jean, Q-Tip, Talib Kweli, Three 6 Mafia, David Banner, Bebe Winans, Mervyn Warren, Jermaine Dupri, DJ Paul, and Scott Storch, among others who wanted to pay tribute to these works by Jones.

Jones, who serves as Executive Producer for the album commented, "Q: Soul Bossa Nostra features some of my favorite artists and producers on the scene today from the Pop, R&B and Hip-Hop worlds performing selections from my catalog that people really loved when they were originally recorded. Each artist picked a song that really resonated with them for different reasons - some of them having a connection because they remembered their parents playing the track when they were growing up. I am honored that everyone wanted to be a part of this celebration of these songs. They all made them their own, and knocked them out of the park."

Commented singer/producer Akon, "Quincy Jones is a musical legend and an incredible mentor. Just being around him and watching him work over the years has taught me how to develop as an artist and grow as a producer. When Quincy called and told me about this album, I said you have to let me do "Strawberry Letter 23" and the funny thing is that's the song he was thinking about already. We brought a new modern feel to this classic and I think everyone's going to really enjoy it."

Also contributing to Q: Soul Bossa Nostra singer/actress Jennifer Hudson commented, "When I was asked to work on a project honoring Quincy Jones' songs my answer was an immediate YES!!!. He is an icon in our industry and to have been fortunate enough to work with him is just amazing. He is a true artist, genius and professional. It was an unforgettable experience and I truly hope I will have the chance to collaborate with him again very soon!!"

A 27-time Grammy Award winner (the most of any living musician) and the all-time most nominated Grammy artist with a total of 79 nominations, Quincy Jones' career has spanned six decades and encompassed the roles of composer, arranger, conductor, instrumentalist, record producer, record executive, film and television producer, magazine founder, multi-media entrepreneur and humanitarian.

As a master inventor of musical hybrids, Quincy Jones has shuffled pop, soul, hip-hop, jazz, gospel, blues, classical, African and Brazilian music into many dazzling fusions, traversing virtually every medium, including records, live performances, movies, television, broadcasting and magazine publishing.

Named by Time Magazine as one of the six most influential Jazz artists of the 20th Century, Jones won the first of his many Grammy Awards in 1963 for his Count Basie arrangement of "I Can't Stop Loving You." His three-year musical association as conductor and arranger with Frank Sinatra in the mid-60's also teamed him with Basie for the classic Sinatra At The Sands, containing the famous arrangement of "Fly Me To The Moon," the first recording played by astronaut Buzz Aldrin when he landed upon the moon's surface in 1969.

As producer and conductor of the historic "We Are The World" recording (the best-selling single of all time), Michael Jackson's multi-platinum solo albums, Off The Wall, Bad and Thriller (the best-selling album of all time), and the multi-Grammy winning Album of the Year Back On The Block, Quincy Jones stands as one of the most successful and admired creative artist/executives in the entertainment world.

Recorded at the Tokyo Toshi Center Hall, Tokyo, Japan, on August 5, 1971, this live set features Henderson with an incredible line up of Japanese young lions. The session took place the day after Henderson's appearance at the Junk Club, Tokyo, for the recording of 'Joe Henderson In Japan' on the Milestone label and is something of a different beast.
"Sunrise In Tokyo" kicks us off with a terrific head and solos from the three major protagonists while "So What" is taken at a rapid tempo and again showcases the big three from the lp title."Get Magic Again" is a more abstract piece moving into New Thing territory with great piano from Kikuchi who penned the title.

In the spring of 2008, five members of Mezzoforte travelled to a remote summer cabin in southern Iceland to start writing the music that would eventually become 'Volcanic', their first studio album for over seven years.

During their stay the band were continually reminded of the awesome and unpredictable power that lay beneath them, especially when an earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter Scale shook the wooden cabin so violently that they could barely keep their balance to run outside. Also visible from the cabin was Iceland's best known and most active volcano Hekla which sparked the idea for the track `Sleeping Volcano', and also the name for the album.

The album will feature the four founding members, Asmundsson, Briem, Gunnarsson & Karlsson, as well as Oskar Gudjonsson, Sebastian Studnitzky, Bruno Mueller and Thomas Dyani.

In the 1980s, Kenny Barron was recognized as one of jazz's top pianists, a modern mainstream master who two decades later is still in prime form. His 1983 trio date with bassist Buster Williams and drummer Ben Riley, Green Chimneys, originally consisted of six songs highlighted by "Softly As in a Morning Sunrise," "Straight No Chaser," and a lengthy version of "There Is No Greater Love." The CD reissue adds a second alternate take of "Time Was," plus three numbers ("Skylark," "When Lights Are Low," and Barron's "Morning Blues") recorded with the same musicians in 1987. The additions are of equally high quality as the earlier set, making this swinging program (which has almost 68 minutes of music) a bargain. ~ Scott Yanow

The Patty Waters who appears on You Thrill Me: A Musical Odyssey 1960-1979 stands in stark contrast to the free jazz maven of Sings and College Tour. The music collected here by San Francisco's Water label is previously unreleased. It is assembled from a collection of home recordings, many of which feature Waters accompanying herself on piano on her own compositions. The recording quality varies, but the quality of the performances does not. This is music from the other side of the blues. There is joy here, but it is tempered by something far more vulnerable, dark, and heartbroken. Whether she is singing the Jax beer jingle that opens the collection, Hoagy Carmichael's "Georgia," or one of her own tunes (such as the title track) or the stark and lovely "At Last I Found You," the contrast between romance and regret, light and dark, optimism and acceptance is ever present in the grain of her voice. Her cover of Billie Holiday's "Fine and Mellow," with its lilting swing, is another choice moment here. The 14-and-a-half-minute "Touched By Rodin in a Paris Museum" is an anomaly in that it is a completely instrumental piece, featuring Waters' beautiful pianism which, in style and tone, is commensurate with her singing. Finally, a charming aspect of this package is in the form of brief dialogues with her recording engineer that precede some of the tracks. The package is full of photographs and liner notes by Waters, Ghost's guitarist Masaki Batoh, and Byron Coley. ~ Thom Jurek

The great Spanish pianist Tete Montoliu has recorded many rewarding sessions for SteepleChase. This trio outing (with bassist Niels Pedersen and drummer Albert "Tootie" Heath) is a typically excellent date. In addition to the lesser-known "Theme for Ernie," Montoliu performs five well-known jazz standards in his own modern jazz style, combining together aspects of Bud Powell, McCoy Tyner and Bill Evans. ~ Scott Yanow

Kansas City Suite is one of Carter's middle period masterpieces. Count Basie recorded it for Roulette in 1960 with his "new testament" band that included Thad Jones, Joe Newman, Frank Wess, Frank Foster, Marshall Royal, Benny Powell, Al Grey and the great latterday Basie rhythm section. Capitol reissued it as a compact disc in 1990, but the LP and the CD fell out of circulation long ago. An internet search discloses that the Basie version is available only as a used LP or an MP3 download.

These two 1960 sessions gave Benny Carter a unique chance to write a full program for Count Basie's orchestra. Arranged as a type of suite, the 10 originals pay tribute to the various Kansas City clubs that were active in the '30s when Basie was a resident. The band swings throughout as usual, with concise solos adding color to this memorable modern session.

BRZZVLL (pronounced Brazzaville) are a seven piece fusion band from Antwerp, Belgium. They play psychedelic jazz and funk with a modern twist. Belgium has quite a tradition for jazz and funk infused leftfield grooves. From Marc Moulin's ingenious Placebo to library funksters Les Chakakas / El Chicles to the much sampled JJ Band (ask Lord Finesse or Marley Marl), Belgium has always been a great place for diggin' deeper. So when our friend Lefto (Brusseles' premier beat ambassador and Brownswood cohort) told us about this great little band from Antwerp, our ears were wide open. After BRZZVLL band-leader Vincent Brijs played us the first demos of what would later become the album HAPPY LIFE CREATOR we had no other choice than offering the band a deal. Recorded in Antwerp and partly mixed by Ben Ladmin aka Nostalgia 77 (Tru Thoughts) in Brighton, HAPPY LIFE CREATOR has little in common with the cool retro sound mastered by Daptone or Truth & Soul. BRZZVLL are rooted in jazz, funk and afrobeat, but their music has an unmistakeably now sound. It is freaky, it is trippy and it follows no rules. Nine songs deep with vocal contributions from Ghanaian Spoken Word artist Joy Frempong ("Lucky Haircut") and Dez Mona frontman Gregory Frateur HAPPY LIFE CREATOR simply doesn't fit in any of the usual boxes!
BRZZVLL have gigged with the likes of Neville Brothers, Young Blood Brass Band, Marcus Miller and Alice Russell.
